One thing that I’m currently working on as an RCC is being able to differentiate between time ‘on the clock’ and time ‘off the clock’. I feel like an RA should always be accessible for certain situations, but what about just having a group of residents in your room talking late at night? I want to be able to foster community, but I also need to sleep. Some of the residents are potentially drunk, and so I am slightly concerned about their safety. At what point is it okay to kick them out and take care of myself? Does this change if the residents are friends? Can residents be friends? I guess another set of questions that comes from this vein of thinking is “How Superman-like do we have to be?” It seems to me that RAs and staff members do assume the roll of very adept duck (in reference to Stanford Duck Syndrome), if not Superman. I assume that I will fall ill next year or even just have days where I can’t muster the same enthusiasm as normally. What happens then?
I guess learning how far/ what our job’s limits are is what I’m interested in. What is something that is “out of the job description”? I think that some of my concerns stem from the idea that the RA is all-encompassing. There is no task too great or too small for an RA to accomplish or that is unreasonable for the RA to be asked.
